Why A Mother Blessing Matters
The Power of My Own Mother Blessing
Today I revisited the photos from my Mother Blessing, and within seconds tears were streaming down my face. Seeing myself held so tenderly and lovingly by my closest friends brought me straight back into the energy of that day - one of the most empowering and moving experiences of my life. And it reminded me how deeply I wish for all women to experience this.
Motherhood and pregnancy, as transformative and beautiful as they are, can also feel incredibly isolating. But in that circle, I felt a truth that has stayed with me ever since: we are never truly alone. In moments of doubt, I have returned to that memory again and again. It became an anchor - a reminder of the unwavering support I have around me.
Life moves fast. It’s rare to gather all your closest friends in one room, to pause time, and connect on such a deep level. I truly believe the love shared that day helped carry me through birth and those tender early weeks of motherhood…and beyond.
A Rite of Passage: Honouring the Mother-to-Be
In my coaching work, I support women as they move through life’s transitions. And the Mother Blessing is one of the most powerful ways to honour a woman during the greatest transition of all: the journey from maiden to mother.
The archetype energy of the maiden is the “spring of life” - carefree, curious, self-led, full of possibility. The mother archetype energy is the “full bloom of summer” - abundant, selfless, and nurturing.
This shift is not simply biological. It is….emotional, spiritual, and profoundly shifts your entire identity. It deserves reverence.
Reconnection: To Ourselves, Our Magic, and Each Other
A Mother Blessing invites us to gather in a way that echoes how our ancestors once sat together around the fire - sharing wisdom, telling stories, laughing, crying, and holding one another.
These circles may feel new to many people, and yet I often hear the same reflection:
“Something about this feels like home.”
I believe an ancient part of us recognises the medicine in this kind of gathering. It reconnects us to the way women have always supported each other, and to how deeply we all crave ritual, meaning, and moments that truly matter.
At its heart, a Mother Blessing is about reconnection:
—> Reconnection to ourselves
—> Reconnection to our innate magic and inner strength
—> Reconnection to our community and the women who walk beside us
It is incredibly healing to be reminded of who you are through the eyes of those who love you. How often do we hear our closest friends speak so openly about what they admire in us, what they see in us, and what makes us an incredible mother already?
It’s rare… and it’s profoundly transformative.
Reclaiming Sacred Ritual
I believe these circles invite us to reclaim something sacred that our modern world often forgets. They remind us to slow down, to honour life’s transitions, and to infuse our experiences with meaning.
Every time I host a circle (a Mother Blessing or simply a Women’s Circle), I can feel how much people long for this - even if they didn’t realise it beforehand. The space becomes a kind of exhale, a homecoming. In my experience, even the least spiritual person in the room will often leave feeling uplifted, softened, or healed on some level.
In a world that highlights division, productivity, and surface-level connection, sitting in circle becomes a quiet but powerful act of remembering our interconnectedness, our humanity, and our divinity.
It is a return to what truly matters.
What Happens in a Mother Blessing?
Every Mother Blessing is unique, but here’s a framework I usually use to create a meaningful, heartfelt circle. It usually takes about 2 hours, but it can be longer or shorter depending on what activities you pick, if any.
Setting up the Space
Before anything, the set up of the space is important. We sit in a circle and in the centre there is a form of altar which technically you can fill with what you want as long as it feels meaningful to you and the mother-to-be. It often includes.
Different vessels of energy or spiritual symbolism- crystal, feathers, scuptures representing the mother archetype, guidance cards, candles, etc.
Leaves and flowers in mandala-style constellations representing our connection to the original mother - our Mother Earth - who we all came from and who we will one day return to.
Possibly also photos representing the energy of the people in the circle.
I use the setting up as an important moment to tune into and set the energy of the space, and grounding.
1. Clear & Welcome into the Space
Use sage, palo santo, or other sacred herbs to energetically clear the room and the people attending
Invite everyone to settle into the circle, creating a sense of calm and sacredness.
2. Grounding the Circle
Begin with a short meditation or collective breathing.
Invite ancestor spirits, guides, or angels to join.
3. Set the Focus on the Mother-to-be
Share the purpose of the circle and invite everyone to focus their energy on love, support, and empowerment for the mother-to-be.
4. Introductions
Quick round of names and connection - how each person knows the mother-to-be.
5. Share Blessings & Wisdom
Invite participants to read letters, share poems, or offer advice (I usually find its better when I ask everyone to prepare what they want to say a few weeks before.)
Use a talking stone or object to guide the sharing and create a safe, sacred rhythm.
Confidentiality and respect for vulnerability are key.
6. Casting Light on Shadows
The mother can share fears or worries in a safe, supportive space.
Other participants can also model vulnerability if needed to open the space.
7. Optional Creative Rituals
Dreamcatcher or charm-making for the baby: Each person adds a charm with a blessing for the baby.
Beading necklaces or bracelet for the mother: Each person adds a selects a bead and says a blessing for the mother whilst threading the bead on the string.
Belly painting: cosy and fun ritual honuring the journey
Framing written blessings: Tangible keepsakes of the circle’s energy.
Creating psychic art: Everyone draws intuitively and writes a message for the mama.
8. Mindful Closing
Everyone takes the hand of the person next to them.
Take several deep breaths together, sending collective love, healing, and support to the mother.
Thank ancestors, spirits, and each participant for their presence.
Optional: participants can choose a guidance card
Tip: Even a small circle can be deeply transformative. The power comes from intention, presence, and community — not the size of the gathering.
Each element serves a purpose: to deepen connection, to honor the sacred transition into motherhood, and to reclaim something timeless and powerful that our modern world often forgets.
Creating Your Own Mother Blessing
If you would like to create a Mother Blessing for yourself (or a friend or a sister), it can be tailored to your circle, your vision, and your unique journey. I would be honored to guide it or offer advice.
With much love,
